Pre-K Through 8th Grade

Mark Callahan

I have been a shamrock my entire life.  I attended the St. Mary's through 8th grade.  I went to Powers Catholic High School and graduated as the class of 2005.  After high school, I attended Mott Community college in which I obtained my Associates in Arts Degree.  I then attended the University of Michigan-Flint in which I graduated with high honors in 2011.  I obtained my Bachelors degree is Science with an elementary education endorsement.  I also have the highly qualified endorsements for language arts and social studies.  I am currently attending graduate school at the University of Michigan-Flint in which I will obtain my Master's in Public Administration degree in the summer of 2016.

I have had a wealth of experience in a very short period of time teaching.  I started off my career working in a 4/5 split during my student teaching.  After graduating college, I worked for Aesop substitute teaching service in which I was a high recommended sub and stayed very busy.  In the summer of 2012, I was given the opportunity to work as a long term substitute teacher in Davison, working with the CAPS program for students who are gifted.  Afterwards, I was given the privilege to work with Mt. Morris Consolidated Schools as a Math Interventionist.  Finally, I reached the pinnacle of my destinations when I was given the opportunity to come home and teach 2nd grade at St. Mary's, replacing my 2nd grade teacher and becoming part of the tradition that is St. Mary's.  I have taught 2nd grade for two years now, with this year being a 1/2 split.  I truly enjoy coming to work and seeing the smiles on my 1st and 2nd graders.

I am a huge sports fan which really shapes what my free time is spent doing.  I coach 5th-8th grade football at St. Mary's.  Starting off as an offensive lineman coach, I have worked with the team for the past 4 years, culminating with a promotion to offensive coordinator.  Our team has steadily improved, posting the best record in school history last year with 4 wins, 1 lose and a tie.  I also coach basketball at the school.  I am very involved with the school functions and teams.  You can regularly see me at Powers events cheering on my former players and helping out however possible.  I am an avid outdoors.  During the summer, nothing is better than sitting on the river, fishing and enjoying the many wonderful gifts that God has given us.

The core of everything is family, whether it be our school family or private family.  I have amazing parents who have taught me the value of hard work, dedication, respect and faith.  I am the oldest of two brothers.  I have 2 dogs (Duke and Sandy) and 1 fluffy kitty (gizmo).  Much like St. Francis of Assisi, I am a big lover of animals and feel that they are family, not pets.

My philosophy for teaching is to create a fun, interactive and exciting learning curriculum that supports students ideas, uniqueness's, and learning abilities in a cooperative family oriented learning environment.  Students are a critical part of the learning experience, and in my room, they are the driving force, for it is their needs and experiences that steer the direction of our ship.  Each student is unique and has something to offer.  I strive to have students reach beyond the stars and achieve greatness.  Most importantly, I believe that through God and the teachings of Jesus, we have the ability to achieve anything, for we never walk alone.  He is our guide.

At St. Mary's Catholic School, we live, love and learn everyday in our faith, academics and friendships as disciples of Christ.
